Ron passed away peacefully at home in Ottawa on March 11, 2018. Born August 26, 1937 in Victoria B.C., he was the son of the late Stanley T. Richards and Victoria E. Richards (nee Keeper) and beloved and cherished husband of 57 years of Nancy (nee Frank). Devoted, and much loved father of Lorraine Dunn (Jim); Stephen Richards (Larisa); and Angela MacIsaac (Glenn). Proud and greatly cherished grandfather of Christine (Jeremy), Wendy, Alyse, Leah, Graham, great grandfather of Hannah and step grandfather to Christian and Armin. Ron is fondly remembered by loving brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and many wonderful friends and neighbours. Ron was predeceased by his sister Elizabeth Gudgeon, brothers-in-law Clark Gudgeon and David Frank and great nephew Ryan Goyette.
Ron proudly served his country in the Royal Canadian Navy for 39 years, as a professional Engineer. His Naval career began at HMCS Venture, Victoria B.C. and included serving on several naval ships, as well as at National Defense Head Quarters, Ottawa and at CFB Halifax as Senior Staff Officer Dockyard Development and as Commanding Officer at 2CFTSA in Montreal. He and Nancy greatly enjoyed his last posting to Japan where Ron served as the Canadian Forces Attaché, Canadian Embassy Tokyo.
Ron especially enjoyed reading, golfing, skiing and sailing with his family. In retirement he also took great pleasure in cruising, researching his genealogy and travelling the world with the love of his life, Nancy. His family joined them on several exciting adventures. He was a founding member of The Friendship Force, Ottawa. Ron had a sharp mind and always enjoyed a good joke. His keen sense of humour kept those around him smiling at his quick wit throughout his life.
Visitation will be held at Beechwood, Funeral, Cemetery and Cremation Services, 280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa, on Friday, March 23, 2018 from 12:30 to 2 p.m. A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. in Beechwood’s Sacred Space. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ron’s memory may be made to the Canadian Memorial Trust - HMCS Sackville or to The Perley and Rideau Veterans’ Health Centre Foundation.
