C. G. (Chuck) KAMENKA Cadet, (Ret'd) |

"Chuck" while he was a Cadet at HMCS Venture, but known as "Greg" in later years, passed away Monday as the result of a heart attack. And he is already missed. In these early days, it is hard to imagine the implications of his departure on our town, but things will become clearer as time passes. In the meantime, however, the News feels it worth mentioning and praising the late councillor for speaking on behalf of his neighbours, even (or maybe especially) when he went against the council grain. Though we have discussed the need for unity and co-operation many times in these pages, Kamenka filled a necessary role on the council. Somehow, democracy only feels like it is working when someone disagrees. In life, many saw him as a political animal. It is unfortunate that we only realize what his presence really meant now that it is gone. After Lillooet has mourned, the seat Kamenka left vacant will be filled via byelection. We hope whoever succeeds him on council will be as dedicated as he was to his town. Growing up in Lillooet and returning in his winter years, Kamenka entered politics relatively late in life in 2002 at age 64, running in every election since. (An earlier version of this editorial incorrectly stated he first ran and won a seat for council in 1999.) He literally worked for us until the day he died. No matter how one felt about his politics, no one can dispute his devotion to Lillooet.
