Born: 25 July 1943
Died: 13 November 2012
69, passed away after a brief illness on November 13, 2012 in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born July 25, 1943 in Staint John, NB he was the third son of the late Donald and Helen (Stableford) Orchard. He was the beloved husband of Mary Lynne Wells-Orchard, and the loving father of his children: Alana, Calgary AB; Craig, Calgary; and Todd and daughter-in-law, Mona Kumar, Monrovia CA. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Baylen and Beckett, Monrovia; sister, Heather and husband Edgar, Granville Ferry; brother, Donald, Madeira Park BC; Charles and wife, Nancy, Rothesay NB; brother-in-law, Stuart Wells and wife Candice, Vancouver BC. He has several relatives in Scotland, United States, Australia and Canada. He was predeceased by brother, Faulds (Chicago, Il).
Angus was a graduate of Moncton High in 1962, HMCS Venture in Esquimalt BC in 1964 and Dalhousie University in Halifax in 1993. Along the way, he also received CGA and CFP designations. Angus loved the sea and began his 33 year naval career in 1964, which would provide him with a life of adventure, comradery of close friends, and pride of service. The Navy he loved and supported brought him around the world aboard several ships, including HMCS Annapolis and HMCS Protecteur. Over his distinguished career he would call several cities home including, Victoria, Oakland, Ottawa and Halifax. When he retired in 1997, he held the position of Deputy Chief of Staff Logistics at Maritime Command in Halifax with the rank of Commander. After retirement from the Navy, Angus began his second career as a financial planner. For the next 13 years, this allowed him to build a business, achieve new accomplishments, help those around him, tell old jokes, meet new people and visit with old friends, all of which he immensely enjoyed.
Above all, Angus was a devoted family man who enjoyed 44 years of marriage with his wife Lynne. He guided his children to achieve academic success, to be responsible and engaging well-rounded citizens, and most of all, to be well-mannered, patient and kind. He was very proud to be a Grampy of two delightful grandchildren, ages four and two years. He took pleasure in their drawings, songs and adventures. Travelling was a lifelong favoured activity. Living in so many different locations afforded family trips to regional attractions, local festivals and engagement in a vast range of activities. Camping in provincial and national parks was a passion for him and his family. In later years, camping and tents would be replaced with cruise ships and resorts. When at home he enjoyed world affairs, business news, sporting events, and watching classic and western movies. He would spend hours tending the yard, feeding the birds and walking the family dog. Some of his favourite times were dining out with family and friends, and enjoying a nice glass of wine and good book on the deck. His companionship, strength of character, and sense of humour will be profoundly missed by family and friends.
A memorial service will be held on November 24 at 11 a.m. in Saint Matthew's United Church, 1479 Barrington St, Rev. Betsy Hogan officiating. A reception will follow the service. Internment will be in Queen's Park Cemetary, Calgary AB at a later date. Donations in memory can be made to Canadian Naval Memorial Trust, HMCS Sackville, PO Box 99000 Station Force, Halifax, NS B3K 5Y5 or a charity of choice.
